BLOOD/SWEAT/TEARS

BLOOD/SWEAT/TEARS is a horror movie, inside of a musical, inside of a play, about Ginny (and her alter egos), a skilled female artist who (like her male collaborators) puts her artistic dreams above all else. But a story of determination turns into a disturbing tale about survival, as reality and fiction begin to blur during Ginny’s pursuit to get the final draft of her musical approved. This is such a bold, original, and insightful musical that it's hard to believe how real it also feels. I found something personal to love in each of the complex layers of this play – brought forward with a cathartic mix of humor and rage. In an era when creative projects are tediously redeveloped, rebranded, and rebooted, B/S/T presents something so wholly original that it feels rebellious.

  • The Workshop Theater: BLOOD/SWEAT/TEARS

The Workshop Theater is pleased to recognize Ali Keller as a playwright selected out of a competitive pool of applicants for our Winter 2020 Writer’s Intensive. The Writer’s Intensive is an eight-week long, playwright-driven process geared towards revising an existing play. Blood/Sweat/Tears is a deft matryoshka doll of a play, layering a trio of complex worlds to highlight the gender disparities enforced in the stories we tell. As her worlds fold into each other, we are all made complicit in what we allow in the service of art. Our congratulations and thanks to Ali.

The task that Ali has set for herself, to write a horror movie, inside of a musical, inside of a play, is a tall order. But Blood/Sweat/Tears is an extremely well written piece that seamlessly weaves the 3 mediums. The characters are all well developed and the struggles the female characters face are true to life. I love this movie/musical/play!
