Alond(R)a

ALOND(R)A tells the story of Alonda and her friends as they wrestle their way through the summer - sometimes it's on the playgrounds in the projects of Coney Island, sometimes it's with their feelings and often it's at home. A coming of age story about friendship and heartache, ALOND(R)A asks how much is too much to fight for?

I read ALLOND(R)A for the first time more than a year ago, back when I was still too shy to write NPX recommendations, and I've thought about it ever since. Rereading it now was just as enthralling as the first time, and I fell in love all over again. Watching Allonda come into herself and her identity is a remarkable experience, and witnessing the moments of vulnerability and tenderness that each other character has is equally lovely. This is a truly magnificent play.

I've been reflecting on all the plays I've read over the past year, and this is one of only a small handful which stuck in my mind. The tone, celebratory and raw, powerful and running out of it's cage - other's have already said it better in their recommendations but I would so love to see this someday. Thank you for this play.

I wake up every day dreaming of seeing a production of this incredible play. It's really astonishing.
