Kiley’s life is ordinary, structured, and complacent. While she has always felt animals were served an injustice in our world, Kiley has never let her affinity for the species consume her thoughts, though lately she has begun to dream about them. When her equally passionate and willful younger sister Camilla shows up unexpectedly, Kiley is naturally concerned—both by the nature of her visit as well as a new form of body art she is sporting. Still, what starts out as a pleasant enough surprise unravels when Camilla reveals her reason for being there is to say goodbye. Camilla has volunteered for a mission to create the first permanent settlement on Mars and is leaving shortly thereafter. In Zane’s absence, Dallas takes a perverse pleasure in sharing information linking Kiley to the crime.
