Kiley’s life is ordinary, structured, and complacent. While she has always felt animals were served an injustice in our world, Kiley has never let her affinity for the species consume her thoughts, though lately she has begun to dream about them. When her equally passionate and willful younger sister Camilla shows up unexpectedly, Kiley is naturally concerned—both by the nature of her visit as well as a new form of body art she is sporting. Still, what starts out as a pleasant enough surprise unravels when Camilla reveals her reason for being there is to say goodbye. Camilla has volunteered for a mission to create the first permanent settlement on Mars and is leaving shortly thereafter. In shock and disbelief, Kiley allows their final meeting to end in anger, and she watches her “pet” baby sister exit to an uncertain future. This ignites feelings of regret and a new sense of purpose, much to the dismay of Kiley’s husband Zane, who perceives her as behaving more and more outside the realm of convention. After Kiley accidentally kills a dog with her car, the ensuing conversation leads to hostility as Zane fights to uphold his idea of what direction their marriage should take while a distraught Kiley clings to her own conflicting desires. Later, meddlesome neighbor Dallas arrives to bring news of a recent hit-and-run murder that took place in the community. In Zane’s absence, Dallas takes a perverse pleasure in sharing information linking Kiley to the crime. Kiley explains away her involvement, but Dallas soon realizes Kiley also has a twisted side, the reason why Zane is missing, and the dark path her devotion to her cause has led her down…

A provocative contemporary drama that explores the way society assigns value to living creatures, the qualities that separate us from animals and those that make us the same, and the lengths people will go in pursuit of what they believe is right.

This piece is an intriguing and thought provoking piece, successfully designed to make the reader stop and think about both the every day habits that we engage in, our social connections to each other, and where we are headed as a society.

    Well done, Sir!
