From what I gathered from the story, it's sort of comedic with an uplifting conclusion. The way both characters are envious of the other despite being in the same predicament is relatable to almost anyone in my opinion. Sometimes we regret the choices we make but then we remember why we do it in the first place. I especially enjoyed how both characters inspired the other despite their similar internal conflict.

How do artists of every sort sustain the creative spark in the face of crippling self-doubt and meagre external reinforcement? That's the question at the heart of this thoughtful reflection on two artists' struggles to keep the spark alive. The miracle is that they do and that is the heartening conclusion that these two highly relatable artists reach.

I'm not sure if Marcia was studying me when I write plays when she came up with the Writer character because that was so relatable, I found it shocking. This is a great artistic take on the old saying "the grass is always greener somewhere else". Myself, and a majority of artists, have at one point or another had these conversations with themselves and so to see it represented in a stage show, it can put that into perspective for the general audiences unaware of how difficult it is to even just write a short ten-minute play.

A life centered around creation is filled with doubt, worry, imposer syndrome, and envy of others who surely don't go through what YOU go through. MARCIA EPPICH-HARRIS finds a beautiful way to make this angst feel familiar in this lovely short piece. What a wonderful piece for two actors to explore.

This is a beautiful little play about the loneliness of artmaking, whatever the medium, and the ways that humans are both essential and detrimental to the process. The setup (two characters in separate spaces) provides an instant sense of theatricality, with characters always a glance away from connection. The final moments are a lovely, well-earned ribbon on top of a sweet, carefully constructed piece. Artists of all types (it's a theatre piece about a visual artist and a writer featuring a music metaphor!) will be able to relate to these characters - now more than ever!

A wonderful little two-hander rich with subtext that captures the essence of internal conflict. ETUDE delivers a well-paced story through believable characters and snappy dialogue. A lovely scene study piece for actors, as well as a solid choice for a shorts festival production!

MARCIA EPPICH-HARRIS’ short piece shows us that creativity is a gift, which some express better as an artist/painter, writer, performer, or in other ways. “Etude” is a touching play with a wonderful message that creativity is what’s most important, not the form in which it is shared with the world.

All the pain of artistic creation in these few pages. We feel for these characters. Would play nicely both in person and on Zoom.

This richly layered play explores the challenges of creating art, from a painter's and writer's perspective. The lovely cadences of the dialogue draw the audience into the creative process of these two artists, their frustrations, hope, and even envy , as well as their thoughts. Like the best songs, the music of the writing expresses as much as the words themselves do. A beautiful play that will get you feeling, thinking, and discussing long after it's over.
