The Elves

TEN MINUTE: In this dark 10-minute Christmas play, there's a reason kids don't come back from the North Pole, and it isn't the frost bite, it's the forever-rhyming blood thirsty elves. Doesn't matter if you're naughty or nice, they will get you.

I love the inherent darkness that resides within the lights of Christmas, and Bublitz has given us a glimpse of it with this play. Without missing a beat we go from cuteness to terror, and it is hilarious.

Rachel Bublitz turns an audience's expectations on its ear with this dark, comic short play set on Christmas Eve. Everyone has a selfish agenda -- the conniving children with plans to ransack Santa's workshop, the cannibalistic elves whose rhyming dialogue is as sharp as their knives, and even Carol Kringle and her obsession with little-girl-meat-pies. The audience almost feels sorry for Santa, an oblivious oaf. Almost. "The Elves" would be a welcome, scary delight for holiday-themed 10-minute play festivals.

This is my type of holiday play! Bublitz takes what should be a cute moment and turns it into dark and scary fun. She's a master of the craft and I would love to see this script fully realized!
