Meet the film team responsible for staging the Apollo 11 moon landing.
Or at least, partially responsible—until their lead actor Neil was whisked away at the last minute when NASA decided to go in a different direction. Now, director Sylvia and her crew are being held prisoner in a classified warehouse somewhere under Kansas, with nothing to do but make a documentary about their thwarted attempt at creating the footage that would inspire the world. Craters is an exercise in fact-finding, (re)enactment, and the power of simulation.

In a play about confined space and being stuck, it somehow accomplishes moments of extra terrestrial expansiveness and unexpected connections between people again and again, continually delighting. No character is wasted but rather grips you with a masterful arc all their own. And all their arcs collide with each other at precisely the right moments, often when you didn't know you needed them to. The themes of ritual, conspiracy, meaning-making-through-art, friendship, love, loneliness-in-spite-of-being-surrounded, and even sexual desires are wittily intertwined in a setting which would shackle our characters to the Earth. And yet, they fight and fight to lift off.

A BRILLIANT, complex, fantastic piece about what happened -- or rather, what could have happened. Wien captures the human condition through an unbeatably unique circumstance. A MUST READ!
