This Is Not A True Story

The heroine of Madame Butterfly completes her tragic suicide, only to wake up trapped in a never ending loop of her story. Then Miss Saigon is born thrusting another heroine into the deadly cycle, until a mysterious office woman throws the world out of balance. This Is Not A True Story unravels the history of Orientalist art, theatre, and the danger of fiction becoming reality.

The trope of the tragic Asian woman we see so often represented in art is put under a microscope in this absolutely stunning play. Choi has crafted this enigmatic world of existentialism and meta-theatricality as he forces audiences to consider the harm that is being done when these are the only stories about Asian women being told. A horrifying play that gives hope about the possibilities that are there when people from marginalized groups are given agency over their own stories. This needs to be produced everywhere but especially wherever a production of Miss Saigon or Madama Butterfly is happening.
