“Sentences and Words” is a story about two women, very different in their life circumstances, or so they think. By the end, playwright Cynthia L. Cooper exposes a raw, vulnerable moment in Maggie and Karla’s life, to prove how alike we all are as we navigate the painful times together. The play presents a bridge that, without confronting the sensitive conflict between the women, would never have been accessible. Their individual points of view are presented with great kindness and grace.

Sentences and Words pulled me in right off the bat. The pain and anguish of both characters: defense attorney Karla in seeking mercy for her murderous client, and Maggie the victim's bereaved mother is visceral and palpable. With an economy of words Cindy Cooper gets these two women from opposite ends of the spectrum to come to a surprising mutual understanding.
