Accidental Burlesque

Accidental Burlesque is a burlesque incorporated theatre piece. It intertwines dance and burlesque within the story of a play. These moments of movement push forward the story and parallel the inner action of the characters’ journeys as they explore love, romance, sexuality and lust.

Accidental Burlesque was developed during New Georges' 2014/2015 Audrey Residency

Funny, theatrical, often moving, and, at times, heartbreaking. Femia utilizes burlesque to enhance the theatricality and structure of this play. I loved all of the disparate elements, from Samm's Youtube clips to the central characters' live performances to the well-scripted, witty scenes. They created a unified aesthetic/theatrical whole! The sizeable ensemble is full of vividly-realized characters and the exploration of walls people erect, public vs. private persona, various kinds of queerness, and the aftermath of difficult life events creates a beautiful mosaic illuminating issues of identity and self actualization.

This bar with burlesque is like a big hole in Bushwick, a place where there shouldn't be boundaries, where you should feel free to be wholly yourself. But even in a place like this people have difficulty connecting, and the desire to connect is why some come for the drinking and dancing. A sexy, serious play about LGB sexuality. Nobody's watching, so sit back, don't be a prude, read this play. This play's mixture of dancing and story scenes is just as ambitious as Pussy Valley by Katori Hall. Some of the most fun stage directions I've read!
