I can not get this play out of my head. I just re-read Tar Beach for the sixth time, and I can't get over how stunning the imagery is. The characters are vivid, the action and lines reverberate... I keep coming back to it. Tar Beach is a must read.

This stunning memory play is a beautiful exploration of sisterhood set against the rich backdrop of a blistering hot summer in Queens. Reenie is a heartbreaker of a character, and her family, in all of their dysfunction, are a dynamic lot to watch. I can't recommend this play highly enough.

This play is beautiful. It is surprising and emotional. The relationships are complicated to go along with the complex symbolism involved as well. Reenie's imagination and memory drives the play forward. I would love to see this show onstage someday. I can imagine it would have really cool design elements to support the writing.

I remember that Son of Sam summer and Ryan captures the heat of those days. I love how Ryan delves into a fairly dysfunctional family but still manages to give them grace notes. Laced with comedy, the dark undercurrents run deep. Reenie smashes your heart. The imagery of the tar beach and Reenie’s mask stay with you. Gorgeous roles for three female teens.

Tammy Ryan's gorgeous play effortlessly brings us back to the summer of 1977. There is not one false note here as a hot summer day unfolds before our very eyes, evolving from what seems at first to be just another hot July day into THE day: the bridge between Reenie's existence before and after. In her wonderful way, Tammy Ryan once again spins a tale of family and identity laced with humor and grit, not once allowing us to guess where this is all heading. This is a heartbreaking and beautiful play.

Such a beautiful story: one that enlarges on the lives of a few captivating characters to become something epic and ambitious.
