My Brother's a Keeper

“My Brother’s a Keeper” puts bisexuality in African-American and Caribbean-American communities front and center without sensationalizing sexual diversity. “My Brother’s a Keeper” puts bisexuality in African-American and Caribbean-American communities front and center without sensationalizing sexual diversity. Set in the 1990s—the golden age of Hip Hop, the play is a twenty-something coming of age story about Kevin, Basil, Cecil, Mona and Charlene as they struggle to be authentic with each other and learn the value of love, fidelity and truth. During one weekend in Fort Greene and Bedford-Stuyvesant (Brooklyn, New York), they rally to support Kevin as he hosts a major fundraiser and launches a new community development program. Tensions that have been building, but largely ignored, threaten to overtake them as they deal as things get funky, boundaries are crossed, and the unspoken is finally given voice. Throughout the play, Brooklyn New York of the 1990s emerges as a vibrant and complicated environment. The characters confront issues such as gentrification and HIV.

"MyBaK" is a contributing work in the funk aesthetic to theatre. The funk aesthetic to theatre is an ongoing interest of playwright and director, Dr. Herukhuti. Inspired by the jazz aesthetic to theatre, he seeks to apply the aesthetics of funk music to conceptualizing, writing and staging theatre productions. Funk aesthetics include (1) challenging respectability politics; (2) use of trickster motif; (3) mixing African and Western symbolism; (4) using mixed media to propel narrative; (5) integrating crisp social critique with a focus on personal and interpersonal dynamics and (6) exploration of sensuality, sexuality and the Erotic.
