FULL LENGTH: Abby, a precocious emo-goth teenager, orchestrates a surprise reunion for her mother Tanya and birth father Tom, with the help of her mom's fiance/healer John. Hoping to provoke long-lasting reconciliation between her parents before her high school graduation, Abby's plans completely derail when Tom arrives with his new girlfriend Alisha. Can this family confront their past traumas, "deal and heal?"

"Teen Dad" subverts popular regional theatre "kitchen-sink beach house dramedy" to share a heartfelt, comedic exploration of generational trauma and recovery in a mixed race Black and Latinx family.

** 3 roles (Tom, Abby, and Alisha) are specifically written for mixed-race actors. NPX does not currently offer a way to tag roles for mixed-race actors.

One of those rare plays that does something important formally while also depicting deep, complex, vivid characters. Their struggles to enter the setting -- which theatergoers will know all too well -- speaks volumes, and their journey to making the setting their own is impactful. Actors and directors should be reading this play ASAP.

A darkly comic vision of a family moving toward healing. Hurtling actually. From the tense and racially charged opening through an explosion of violence to the revelation of painful histories, this play grabbed me by the throat and didn't let go.

This is fun and outrageous and frustrating and painful and man, what a ride! Dawes put us in a familiar situation(for some of us) then turns it around into a beautiful study about the ripple effects of childhood trauma. Hilarious and incredibly smart, what are you doing not reading this play?
