This year’s winning script, “I, Cockroach” by Irene L. Pynn, is a creepy, absurdist commentary on relationships with nods and references to Franz Kafka’s horrific body transformation allegory “The Metamorphosis.”

“It is so clever, and I think it really does make a statement about what we value in a relationship, how people treat us and what we’re willing to accept or not accept,” Tufford said. “It’s just not (a script) that you’re going to see in this area.”

A one-act play in which a romance between a roach and a woman is the catalyst to ending her toxic relationship with her verbally abusive husband.

This premise is so absolutely ridiculous and yet so poignant. It's a classic who's-the-real-monster with a delightful Kafkaesque twist (and very self aware of it). I want so desperately to see this on a stage. Pynn has really made something just ridiculously funny, disgusting, and touching.

It begins with a couple trying to get rid of a cockroach and then goes places you'd never expect. This play, which could've been just a silly take off on The Metamorphosis, is instead, at turns, smart, funny, sweet, and sad. The writing is full of wit, imagination, and empathy, and very much worth the read.

What a fun, wonderful surprise this play was. I, COCKROACH is romantic and sweet and horrifying and smart. I love the riffs on Kafka. On the surface, this is a fun romp, but it also honors the sanctity of life in an utterly original way. Totally loved it.
