This play is about racism, sexism, artistic freedom, and feeling comfortable being yourself. It also has songs. And jokes. And a surprising ending that I didn't see coming. And despite the many heavy topics it deals with, "Tiger Beat" maintains a bubblegum pop lightness, which makes the betrayals and awful remarks cut deeper when they occur. It's a great play.

Boy bands are so yesterday, y’all need to meet Girls Next Door!

This play is laugh-out-loud funny… and a deep dive into the exploitative, oppressive nature of the music industry …. and an ode to early 2000s pop music. There is romance, there is drama (both organic and fabricated), and there are complicated familial relationships. This play has it all!

A fun and sharply written story with wonderful characters. Although a period piece, the portrayal of the exploitative nature of the music industry is still very much relevant. Tess, the heart of the story, is a particularly strong character, and her struggle to define herself in a frankly racist industry is very relatable and powerful. I particularly love the meta ending and the questioning of the very tropes employed in the play.

A journey in time through pop culture, fashion choices and how art shapes one's identity. Well done.

TIGER BEAT is as much a wonderful nostalgic romp through the early 2000's as it is a searing critique of the way that we continue to create art to this day. Hearing this play read aloud I laughed, I cried, and I dare anyone to not get the very catchy song, "Girls Next Door", stuck in their head. This is a masterful work of art and I sincerely hope it receives productions across the country.

Such a dynamic piece with a propulsive narrative thread. It weaves together various aesthetic sensibilities into a coherent whole. The intersectional exploration of celebrity culture, pop music, and identity-driven double standards in the entertainment industry is powerful sharp. The genre-bending meta-turn in the last quarter of the piece is surprising and potent. The poignant coda of Tess' song is a perfect ending. I hope to see this onstage so soon!

Playwrights Foundation highly recommends TIGER BEAT, which excelled to the Finalist round (top 35) for the 44th annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival out of 755 plays. Our community of readers felt this play best represented the mission of our festival. The work engaged us, inspired us, moved us, and was an outstanding example of transformative storytelling. Our local Bay Area Literary Council commends TIGER BEAT as a compelling, relevant, cathartic new work which should be produced now. Congratulations! #BAPF2021
