SOMERSAULTING

An adaptation of Sammy Harkham's 3-color comic from Drawn & Quarterly Showcase #3, SOMERSAULTING follows two best friends, Iris and Edie, during a long summer before their senior year of high school. Set in a run-down beach town, this is a story of a droning summer spotted with the girls' discoveries of death, love, and sex, propelling them both into adulthood.

Remember the moment you grew up? Iris and Edie of Liz Maestri's Somersaulting certainly do. We workshopped this play in 2014 as part of Field Trip Theatre's staged reading series in DC bars. I selected this play because I love the way Liz makes three-color jump off the page and onto the stage. Her characters are both world-weary and clueless, both vicious and generous. They're complicated in all the right ways. And they're wonderful. This play is for everyone who has ever had a best friend.
