The Workshop Theater is pleased to recognize Liz Amberly as a playwright selected out of a competitive pool of applicants for our Fall 2020 Writer’s Intensive. The Writer’s Intensive is an eight-week long, playwright-driven process geared towards revising an existing play. Liz skillfully combined realism and poetry in Embers, creating a beautiful visual-symbolic world using gardening and sculpture to give reflections on the life and death of love in marriage. Her work is graceful and kept us right in her hands. Our congratulations and thanks to Liz.

Embers is a beautifully written play with powerful visuals -- a delicate balance between light and dark. Embers is about the death of a relationship and what happens when all our wounds are exposed (literally). Can love be reborn from the ashes of deceit? A play about the aftermath of a terrible house fire and the embers that linger in the relationship. Poetic & powerful -- a potent story about marriage and the different ways we can show love.

"Embers" is a beautiful, harrowing look at the devastation of a marriage both before and after a fire. Through lovely metaphors, Amberly draws parallels between the growth of gardens and people, both of whom need tending, both of whom need love, both of whom need to rebuilding.
