Jawbone

by Isabella Waldron

In an old mining town in the Pacific Northwest, 17-year-old Frankie, Sofia and Lilah attempt to navigate growing up amid hauntings and ghost stories. "Jawbone" explores the nexus between ghost stories and sexual assault, asking which stories people choose to believe and which they don't.

Excellent play for 3 teenage actresses. Loved the use of the moths and the potential for creative stage magic it has.

The Workshop Theater is pleased to recognize Isabella Waldron as a playwright selected out of a competitive pool of applicants for our Fall 2020 Writer’s Intensive. The Writer’s Intensive is an eight-week long, playwright-driven process geared towards revising an existing play. We were consistently struck by Isabella's almost lyrical stagecraft choices in Jawbone. Her blending of ghost stories, old radio programs, dreamscapes and fantastical imagery create a fascinating, highly atmospheric piece. Our congratulations and thanks to Isabella.

I was so lucky to take part in The Workshop Theater's Fall 2020 writers' group with Isabella Waldron and witness a step in the development of JAWBONE! From the start, I was so deeply taken with this play and the way it lets three young women be so real and true, while simultaneously making its magical world entirely believable for audience members or readers. JAWBONE tells a painful but engaging story of sexual assault and coming of age as a young woman. I can't wait to see where it goes next!
