Sweet Summer Wine

by Brent Alles

(10-minute play.) BRETT and CAMILLA have been married for 20 years. They're on summer vacation, and unfortunately for JENNY, a perky server at popular winery Chateau Chateau, they've decided to do some wine tasting. Thus begins JENNY's quest to provide something sweet enough for them to remember this vacation fondly... or at least to leave her alone.

Brent excellently portrays the middle-aged, superficial, and pretentious couple whose lives are primarily shaped and directed by external influences. The internal development of their relationship has visibly ceased, so they internalize everything as quickly as possible, believing that this will help them rediscover what they left behind long ago. Fortunately, Jenny is remarkably effective at alleviating this tension. She is even better than sweet wine.

Brent Alles brings the funny with the short SWEET SUMMER WINE. We all know "those people" - or if we don't then maybe we are them? Great premise. Who can't relate to poor Jenny as she suffers through the conflict of providing customer service and educating the willingly ignorant. A happy result is we get to laugh in amusement. Well done.

Wow! Brent Alles, your play about a married couple wine tasting on vacation is hilarious. Brett and Camilla try to seem knowledgeable about wine, but their server, Jenny, sees right through them—they actually prefer sweet wine. Their antics and Jenny's comic relief highlight the challenges of keeping marriage exciting. Jenny delivers some of the play's funniest lines, and the clever jokes and relatable characters make the audience feel happy.
