As a writer, I strive to take chances on the page that force the script to occupy as much imaginative space as possible. I love scripts that are clear and wondrous and provide directors with the room to make a visual impact.
I have been working as a playwright with Ten Thousand Things Theater over the course of 6 years through the Mellon National Playwright in Residence Program. That theater's wide audience is composed of an expanse of human beings that far exceed the typical theater going audience. So when I write, I am now always thinking about who might be touched and connected by stories. I think about what stories are necessary and affirm what stories can do to inform, shift and open us in big (and little) ways. These audiences, imagining them as I write, has made me think in a deep way about the “why question.” Why this story? Why now? And for whom?
