Artistic Statement

As a playwright who is blessed to be both a woman and of African American heritage, my artistic intent is simple and pure. To rage against the invisibility perpetrated on my race and sex. I use words to explore the forgotten people. The people whose joy, pain and life rhythms have been exploited. I seek to celebrate the depth in the brilliant commonality, the vibrant humanity of black folk.

As far as I can remember, I have always been a storyteller, as a child, I wrote short stories, poetry. Today, my plays consistently draw rich, honest characters, places them in recognizable contexts, out of which utterly original interactions and revelations are born. I celebrate African American lives, while my themes reach beyond race, tackling subjects that range from intergenerational struggles to the universal search for love.
