Artistic Statement

Artistic Statement

I write for theatre because I believe people are lonely and hungry for meaning, and theatre offers a communal opportunity to experience sacred stories. Theatre inspires, educates, provokes and comforts. Theatre is my way of connecting with humanity, and I am nurtured by the collaborative artistic process.

Stories that interest me connect people across distances created by gender, place, race, time, politics, economics and religion. I am most inspired by stories that offer audiences meaningful insights into otherness, yet resonate with universal experiences of the heart.

My stories are frequently rooted in political, social and/or artistic history. My writing is often non-linear, and fluid in time, place and memory. My plays are expressionistic, humanistic, intellectual, honest and provocative. I revel in stories that live in the tension between drama and comedy and that are attentive to universal human struggles with the mysteries of soul, identity, place and purpose.

My commitment to theatre and new play development extends to dramaturgy and to producing a new play reading series that I call Bare Bones Theatre: Theatre You Can Chew On. I also promote writing for theatre as the 2018-2019 Literary Laureate for the City of Laguna Beach, California, and as a commissioned playwright of Creede Repertory’s Young Audience Outreach Tour.
