Artistic Statement

Artistic Statement

My primary artistic goal is to re-center who I create my art for, and to re-establish why I create art. I am thrilled at the prospect of working with like-minded theater professionals, who understand my “short hand” and can inspire me to move beyond my subconscious and sometimes debilitating need to please certain audiences. As a Korean American playwright, I seek to find innovative ways to express my intentions, rather than obsessing that I may sound too “angry” or that I haven’t spent enough time “developing” (i.e.: “centering”) the peripheral characters in my script.

I am inspired by the revolutionary works of women and playwrights of color who speak to power in fearless and unconventional ways. I seek to take comparable stylistic and theatrical risks, in order to generate new work that moves into systems and spaces where diverse works by and about women and people of color can thrive.

We are at a moment in history when supporting and promoting traditionally marginalized voices is more crucial than ever. As an artist, I seek to resist systemic oppression, by actively engaging and disseminating those stories that must be told.
