Artistic Statement

Writing is how I think, how I relate to the world. If something confuses, upsets or disappoints me - as many things human do - I write to come to understand. The process inevitably raises more questions than answers. I write to share this thinking process with my audiences. Writing is a constant exploration for me. After eighteen years of daily practice, I can rely on my craft, trust my imagination and dare to risk pushing into the unknown. My plays are increasingly layered and complex. There is tremendous variety in form, character, story and action all in service of creating a dynamic experience for my audience. There is always an economy - even in an otherwise unrealistic world - there is an accounting of costs and recognition of status. The action plays out against a large field that expands on the relationships between the characters piercing to the depth beneath the surface.
I create plays, musicals and dance theater on my own and collaboratively. I write out of a need to make sense of the world. I find myself worrying about our planet, our choices, our inability to unite. I muck through the damage I witness in hopes reparation is possible. My subjects include climate change, gender, baseball, justice, insurgency, friendship, love, hate, race, being female, art. Sick of being female, I write being human. Intrigued by form, my plays are structurally inventive. I write seeking an intimate connection with my fellow theatre makers and my audience. I write to be less alone. For me, the richest writing is found in the moment, when I am fully present, thinking and feeling my way. I want my audience to have that present moment feeling. Structurally, my plays are an unfolding of experience, thought and discovery. I purposefully leave room for the audience's imagination. I actively seek collaborators who share my vision. Increasingly I think of myself as a theater maker and rather than passively having my agent send out scripts, I pull together teams to pursue grants, opportunities and find productions. The theater that excites me is made out of a passionate need to express. I have that need and gravitate to such productions. The time feels very much now to me to make work that is startling, life changing and new.
