Artistic Statement

My work seeks to tell stories that include characters who have qualities that make them a part of an underrepresented population - and whose humanity is more complex than that quality alone. My plays are at their best when they are simultaneously entertaining enough to be funny and resonant enough to hit close to home. For the most part I explore the nature of a family's influence on one's identity, and particularly moments when childhood dies. I'm also extremely conscious of my privilege and its limits as a white gay man, and that plays heavily into my values as a playwright. My artistic goals include teaching theatre and/or playwriting at the undergraduate or high school level as a way to champion the future of the craft and to help young people enjoy fuller human experiences by learning about and through drama.
