Artistic Statement

Artistic Statement

I've been immersed in aspects of storytelling for as long as I can remember, beginning with the shows I performed in the basement with the neighborhood kids at a young age. After working for many years as an actor, I felt compelled to tell a bigger story. And so, I wrote a play. For that first play, I was awarded a fellowship from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. The same day, I learned that a script for television placed in the top 10 in another competition. I took that as an affirmation to change artistic paths, and I've been writing plays ever since. My stories tend to be about families--families of friends, families of co-workers, families of blood relatives, and about people who are thrown together unexpectedly for a time and become families. It's important to me to write with emotional truth and try to reflect the human condition honestly. I'm interested in exploring behavior and the motivations of characters, but also in relating to the larger world and contemporary issues. And always, my goal is to connect to others and our shared humanity.
