Artistic Statement

My plays are stories about stories. I’m intrigued by how we choose which stories to wear, and the ways in which the identities we curate become a story we tell others about ourselves. Writ large, our current political upheaval shows how important those stories are, as people wholeheartedly invested in a version of history where they’ve always been the only heroes lash out violently at those who challenge that comfortable fiction in an attempt to tell a fuller, more accurate tale. But these tensions are always with us in smaller ways, too. Much of my work deals with myth, religion, family legends, comic books, other plays, race, and history...and the ways we navigate our relationships to all of these things. I write to investigate how we tell ourselves who we are.
