Artistic Statement

I write plays because I like hearing how people think.

I also wrestle with questions and I create characters that want answers. My best work comes from deepening my relationship to a question without finding an answer. When I think I've found an answer to a question, I've never been more lost.

I write plays that grapple with history, identity, race, religion and politics. I studied American history and society in college, so these are the issues that matter the most to me. I believe we live in a time where we repeat historical patterns. If art is going to survive climate change, fascism and capitalism, then it must find ways to free us from these cycles.

Art must liberate us from the pressure to reenact.
