Artistic Statement

As a bicoastal Gemini femme playwright with ADHD, I’d explored many mediums before I wrote my first play. While my work as a media artist was shown at The Kitchen, MOMA, New Museum, Central Park SummerStage and on MTV, I remained restless - until I stumbled upon playwriting.

Writing for theatre feels like infinity to me, with each play answering a question with yet another question. I bring my full heart to the vocation of playwriting, along with a deep understanding of the creative process from my work as a painter, photographer, video artist, and filmmaker.

My goal is to continue mining the fun, fury, and feminism that activates both my outrage and my imagination. I love pushing boundaries and buttons. I love challenging the status quo by poking at the cracks in the façade so Truth comes spilling out. I love exquisite craft.

For me, storytelling is a language that translates ideas into emotions while inviting audiences on a journey that changes their perspective. My plays unpack America icons from 9/11 to Monica Lewinsky to the Marilyn/Miller marriage. I’m drawn to these explorations because at their core, they’re stories of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, ones that illuminate larger societal issues.

In MARVEL-OUS MONICA; IN WHICH MONICA LEWINSKY IS A SUPERHERO HELL-BENT ON REVENGE, Monica Lewinsky finds her voice by facing her trauma. The play also unites the "divided feminine” by making space for Marvel-ous Monica and Nasty-Woman to become allies.

ABIGAIL also explores intergenerational conflict around #MeToo issues. The play exposes how the excuses we make for our revered giants work to perpetuate the cycle of predatory behavior. Misogyny is as virulent as ever, and as a femme playwright over 40, I feel it’s incumbent upon me to illuminate its dangers for the next generation of women.
