Artistic Statement

Artistic Statement

I reframe from the idea of making a statement about my practice, as it is always evolving, changing, shifting. My practice is based on the transformation of my identity navigating through the world I live in, as a white passing latino man who is proud of his culture and deals with his own privileges. I believe in the innate power of art to create consciousness, and the innate instinct of humans to be kind; I believe it is through art-making that we find the synthesis of both. We find the opportunity to imagine the future while honoring the past.

I challenge for art to be decolonized, from perspective, to quality, to relevancy. I challenge the believe that art is defined by institutions, and I welcome the individual opinion to constitute the meaning of art. My individual opinion, the individual opinion of the communities of our world at large, the opinion of humans. I challenge the process of art making and the cost of such, reconfiguring expenses to be used wisely, as no art practice should be made standing on the labor of our brothers of color, for the sake of their own stories.

I believe in stories as tools of impact, and the transformation of the body, mind and soul through artistic exploration. My practice is based on the effort of communities to bring forth the creation of expressions, through storytelling, performance and film. I believe excellency in art is not achieved through the acceptance of the masses, but rather through the journey of the makers and its impact on the audience, no matter how many people are impacted. I believe in the power of the individual.
