Artistic Statement

Shakespeare is a huge influence in my life, as I am sure he is for many artists. He was a poet and genius, but at the heart of it, he wanted to make theatre for his own time and place. This idea of time and place is two-fold for me. For my own art, it means responding to where I am as a person. If pertinent, it means revealing what is going on in my life and heart on the page.

The other aspect of time and place is much more obvious. It is the idea that as artists, we must respond to what is happening in the world we live in. If theatre is a reflective mirror of society, then it is the writer’s job to capture the spirit of that age through the language and stories of its people. We are all too aware that there is so much happening in our world. Right now, my goal as a writer is to speak to the change I want to see, particularly as it pertains to oppressed groups.

I aim to pursue truth in everything that I write in hopes of exploring what it means to be human in our time and place.
