Artistic Statement

My idea of a perfect evening of theatre is seeing a play that entertains me, that makes me feels something, and that makes me think about something I’ve never considered before. And I like to laugh, even when the subject matter is heavy. This is the sort of theatre I aspire to create.

I try to write plays that matter, that address issues of our society in an intimate and compelling manner,... though I have no interest in being preachy or dogmatic. I want to ask questions with my plays, not necessarily answer them. I believe in writing not what I know, but what I want to know. I also feel a responsibility to create characters that reflect the world I live in, and that world is not all white, or straight, or full of people who look and think the way I think. I believe in theatre that bridges the gaps between us, that fosters understanding, that makes us see someone else’s perspective and takes us on an emotional and intellectual ride.
