Artistic Statement

I am a retro-neo-post-modernist, having missed post-modernism by about 60 years and neo-post-modernism by 20-30 years. I place character over plot, use perspectives that come in at odd angles, and accept absurdity as a natural element of the environment. Time regulates how much can happen, but words demand more time than they are given in order to be fully understood. Dialogue more naturally introduces characters than description, because what we say defines us better than what we look like. Wide ranging experiences and equally broad interests extend my work into many genres and formats. They also result in layers of meaning. The key elements are identity, relationships, growth opportunities, self-evaluation, and understanding gained through action. Anton Chekhov, Tennessee Williams, and Edward Albee cause many things to happen to their characters only for those characters to find themselves almost back where they began but now with choices to make and more experience to guide them. Conclusions are up to the audience or reader to decide. If someone has been engaged and entertained by my work and walks away thinking 'what just happened?', the piece is a success.
