Artistic Statement

I’ve always been obsessed with theater. I’ve always written. Until 2017, I didn’t combine my two passions, I think because I didn’t know anybody who did that. This changed when I found myself sitting next to Patrick Marber, a guest instructor at the writing workshop I was on, at Arvon, in the Yorkshire woods, asking him why he wrote plays. This was the seed. Then I found Royal Court Theater and its amazing podcast with Simon Stephens that proved to me with every episode that people do write plays and these plays are current, poignant, and very real.

The election of Trump was the greatest provocation. Now, I write for #metoo; for those women whose early trauma got unearthed by Trump’s America; for immigrant women, of which I’m one; and for men who want to do better. I write to show who we are.
