Artistic Statement

My life as a writer began in the studio of an abstract expressionist painter in San Francisco, and as a result, my plays developed a visual theatricality all their own. The language of my plays emerged from my poetry and my poetry was consumed by my plays: free verse with quick-fire rhythm, vivid imagery, and near-rhymes. My plays have been described as “moving, strange, essential,” distinguished by a “fearlessness of language” and “flesh-and-blood characters that transcend being ‘just people,’ embodying certain forces.” Always raw, always philosophical, funny even in the darkest ways & moments, my plays harness the contrast between bright lights and dark darks to get at truths we rarely acknowledge.
