Artistic Statement

My father is a Lebanese immigrant to the United States and my mother is a first-generation Chicana. Growing up, from a young age I learned to be thoughtful about identity formation. How should I identify? How should I signal to friends and family what these identities are? How do these performances of identity shape the world around us? With this in mind, it seemed almost instinctual to gravitate toward theatre and performance. Theatre becomes a space in which to acknowledge and examine who we are as performing selves. Playwriting allows me to confront not just how I see myself, but how I see others. In my artistic practice, I use contemporary theatre to investigate questions of culture, power, identity, belonging, and the layers of meaning created when we’re given permission to perform as performing selves.
