Artistic Statement

I descend from a dual legacy: bilingual writer-editors wielding words with surgical precision, and WASPs too polite to even glance at the fiery political journalism my mother's people crafted. Unsurprisingly, I inherited her rebellious spirit. Growing up, my mother and grandmother were havens for my fledgling writerly wings, while the Spanish, English, and Yiddish-kissed Brooklynese swirling around me became a playground for language.

These fierce critics weren't merely editors; they were whetstones sharpening my work, regardless of form. In my mid-forties, with their indelible mark on me, I felt I had earned the right to fictionalize.

As a feminist, I'm drawn to stories of defiant women who persisted under the crushing weight of discrimination and repression. My work echoes with non-traditional staging techniques born in Eastern Europe, where theatre defied scarcity and oppression. I am an archaeologist of the collective soul, unearthing the stories of women who lived before the comforts of running water and brick walls, women who carved their own paths in worlds of earthen floors and hand-drawn wells. Their journeys inspire me, ignite my own fire, and through my art, I illuminate their stories, casting light on the path I walk myself.
