Artistic Statement

I write plays and make live performance. I see theater as practice for civic life.

I'm interested in how people gather. I'm interested in how people look at each other and listen to each other. I'm talking about the stuff that might happen in a play. I'm also talking about the stuff that might happen in a room where a play is happening. And that's sort of the point. My writing grows out of my solitary love of books, but also out of my experience in community, religious and radical, in tents, grange halls, fields, synagogues, memorial circles, and around maypoles. What if choices about art were also choices about how we want to be in the world? Can the work we make be connected to the world we make?
