The biggest and boldest facet of my personhood is my intense emotional bandwidth. My heart turns from fire to ice each time the clock ticks; my emotions weave riddles my brain will never be able to unknot. And the more I live with this fact of life-- the fact that I will never feel neutrally about anything-- the more am able I embrace my raw and unfiltered style of storytelling.

In the self-help book Emergent Strategies, Adrienne Maree Brown describes emotion as a time-traveller, explaining, “it is like anything else that traverses time, both fully of another time and fully present in the place when it appears.” With every story I tell, there is a time loop to venture through, be it the 1980s fashion industry of THE MODEL PLAY or the Victorian girls’ boarding school of VILLETTE. I am committed to highlighting the intense emotional depth of young women throughout time, unfiltered and unhinged. Traveling through time and, each time, landing on a planet where young women are able to act disgustingly and flawed, is a standard I am married to in my work.

I write for all of the times I snuffed my own candle, not because I was forced to but because I simply didn’t know shining was an option for me. I time travel to give audiences access to the universality of emotion, even in teenage girls who are often dismissed in the name of angst.
