Artistic Statement

My interests lie in two directions. As a historian I have recently specialized in writing plays that teach history, often geared toward middle and high school audiences. I am a PhD in American history and have written successful plays about the Civil Rights movement and the Underground Railroad. As a classically trained actor, I also prefer to write works set in the historical past or with heightened use of language suitable for groups adept at acting Shakespeare, Moliere and Shaw, etc. Some of my more successful plays in this vein have been based upon classics from literature. My goal in writing a play is to uplift and celebrate the human condition more than to denigrate and demean it. Just as I think a good teacher should light a fire under his or her students toward positive thought and action, I believe a good play or musical can do this as well.
