Artistic Statement

I’m a dedicated native of the Pacific Northwest and also a second-generation German-Russian who has spent these past few years navigating the rich and unfamiliar sensibility of the South. Like my love for theatre and nearly equal passion for Formula One racing, it feels like much in my life and art is a clash of opposites. My plays are full of images, coincidences, and secrets. They are inherently political and often triggered by a real-life event that leads to something else. A sense of danger often creeps in and I want it. Some pieces are multidimensional as I am drawn to the organic possibilities of incorporating film, video, puppetry, aerial movement-- even old-fashioned magic tricks that can amaze though maybe you “know” how they did it. I initially write plays to work through my latest “burning question” -- some form of “why do they do it” or “what would happen if ” -- but instead of pat answers what I most want is to provoke discussion and maybe a new set of questions.
