Artistic Statement
I wrote my first play at age eight, under my bed, in a notebook, during a hurricane. Growing up in central Houston, I was a city kid with unusual knowledge and experience of floods; I pulled my childhood fears out and transcribed them, trying in vain to use writing to understand the way my environment was crumbling around me.
Now, I make plays for my own adolescence. My plays are hyperrealistic, collaborative stories of queer and trans youth; the things I needed to see as a child but didn’t. I use plays to explore the space between binaries, to connect with the best and worst parts of the communities I come from while incorporating the resistance, resilience, and euphoria that marked my adolescence. I write plays about found family; I build worlds that are grounded and sincere even in their moments of uncertainty and fear.
I am passionate about art that has feet in many doors. My work combines hyperrealism, ensemble-devised text and movement, community-based creation, and warm, youthful stories of queer joy. In the future, I intend to continue writing and devising work in Austin and beyond.
