Artistic Statement
I’m most fascinated with the darker side of human nature, why it exists and how it manifests itself. I love to explore why people do what they do, with as little judgment as possible, and with empathy. I’m usually most excited examining less popular themes. For example, in my play GREENER I wondered if suicide might be justified for someone who is spiritually broken. In LEXY, I probed what would happen if a therapist realized she could not help a very troubled teen. And in CONSENT, I explored how much an impressionable young boy could be bullied and abused before he chooses to fight back. And whether the damage the people in his life caused is irrevocable. Giving it a good think, most of my protagonists are damaged. Aren’t we all? But it’s how they handle it that continues to beguile me—how people get through this wonderful, fabulous muck.
I like to push myself out of my comfort zone as I did with LURED, about the Russian persecution of gays, going to the most brutal and honest extremes to tell the truth and explore complex questions about our humanity.
