Artistic Statement

As a playwright I constantly seek to create art that helps me gain insight and understanding into who I am not just as an individual but as a member of the collective society as a whole. The clarity that I gain from my work helps to identify and cement my role to enlighten and enrich the lives of others. As an artist, I have always been deeply interested in an exploration of the spiritual realm and its influence on one's personal discovery. I create in my writing a cultural gumbo-like combination fusing contemporary African American urban culture with Christianity, mythology, folklore and superstitions of other cultures in hope of understanding our ancestral past and how it affects our future. It is through utilizing and exploring these questions through my art that I hope that I can build a connection to my community so that it can one day be a rallying call to stand against whatever injustices or difficulties might come about. More so than ever my scope of vision has widened to a global scale. In regards to influences I find that I’m drawn to August Wilson, Wole Soylinka, and the Czech Playwright Havel. I seek to foster diverse young audiences by exploring themes of cultural identity, gentrification, racism, socio-economic inequity, and human rights. I work immensely with symbolic imagery and heightened poetic realities while creating performances that stir community-based discussions.
