Artistic Statement

Unsurprisingly, none less than the master of English drama put it perfectly when he had Polonius recite, 'To thine own self be true'. Indeed, a prevalent reason why I am a playwright is because I have not yet seen my language or culture yet represented fully and authentically on the stage. Just as it takes one to know one, it also takes one to show one. So, instead of sitting back and allowing hearing people to write all the plays about Deaf people, watering down our stories to fit their own mainstream ambitions, I felt it was more than time for us to start sharing our lives from our perspectives as only we can. This is what I strive to create within the theatre industry for Deaf people: a space for representation where we can live in our truth. There are a myriad of fascinating stories yet to be told from within our community - beautiful testimonials of the power of the human spirit - and we have only yet been allowed to scratch the surface in the sharing.
