Artistic Statement

"Some people love the money / some people love the honey / but I love art.
Some people love the cash / some people love the flash / but I love art / and I make it out of trash."
Isaiah Zagar, written on the walls of Philadelphia's Magic Garden.

Look, I tried being a Serious Artist, and it made me very unhappy. So now I make the things I like. My art is usually low budget and frequently a little silly. It sometimes includes puppets made from objects in my recycling bin. Occasionally it also contains bits of circus arts; I grew up training as an acrobat in the former Soviet Union and sometimes that side of me sneaks back out.
I dabble in a lot of disciplines. My work and my subject matter reflect that. I talk about science and technology, wildlife conservation and the great outdoors. I think exciting conversations seldom happen at room temperature. I like settings and environment that keep characters on their toes.
I tell stories about outsiders and unlikely communities. Nomads and rulebreakers. Innovators and risk-takers.
I collaborate with filmmakers and dancers. Artists and multi-hyphenates. People who are always curious and love what they do.
