Artistic Statement

Inspired by my skeptical interest in the fields of history and anthropology, my work deals with power and how it manifests itself in individual and societal contexts. I tell stories and explore storytelling modes and traditions across eras and cultures. My projects include books, films, performances, photographs, paintings, and other imaginings often merged across genres and media. I am particularly invested in telling women's stories and working with other marginalized groups to help them tell their own stories. I am deeply influenced by my Salvadoran-American background, upbringing in the South, life in New York City, and dedicated global travels. One common through line in a large body of my work is the mythology I created about El Salvador as a little girl, having never visited the Motherland, and how fantasy became a coping mechanism. General interests include gender, the environment, technology, immigration, and disability. I've been known to combine poetic, comedic, and magical approaches to explore these themes.
