Artistic Statement

I am a writer, actress, audio artist and radio producer whose work combines humor, pathos and a love of the absurd. For over twenty years I have been creating interdisciplinary works in audio and theatre, portraying voices often ignored by the mass media. My work bridges elements of language as music and the music of language. As a writer I have worked on projects that are informed by oral history and interviews, using both verbatim dialogue and poetic dialogue, and have written librettos for music compositions and a symphony as well as poetic works for the stage. My work has been produced throughout the United States, in Europe, Canada, Japan and Israel; in theatres, at festivals, in universities, in high schools and elementary schools, in libraries, in exhibition spaces, in jails, and on the radio. In my solo performances I create theatrical environments that juxtapose a variety of characters who reveal themselves through confessional humor and dramatic monologues. These pieces reflect a wide spectrum of experiences, attitudes and ages. I am interested in bridging writing, music composition, and improvisational character-based theater. Characters expose their own daily rituals, fears, hopes and dreams in an attempt to make sense of the chaos and mystery of life. I began my audio work through radio production using reel to reel tape, and now utilize digital technology, sampling, various audio software programs both for in-studio composition and real-time live performance. For most of my career, I have been working on projects that deal with issues of social justice and vulnerable populations having grown up with a tremendous amount of loss, I find that the places we can connect in theatre are the places where we find humanity in each other.
