Artistic Statement

Matthew McLachlan possesses an especially keen ear for modern issues, authentic characters, organic dialogue, and the essential elements of both comedy and drama. Neither his youth or his newness as a playwright detract from the maturity and clarity of his writing voice. He communicates the perspective and nuance of a much older, more experienced artist even when he’s exploring a contemporary issue like our modern dating and relationships. McLachlan creates stories and people that will absolutely speak to audiences on a personal, identifiable level and, most importantly, leave them fully entertained and still wanting more.

His work is composed of the many qualities that characterize McLachlan: modern sensibilities, authenticity, and a strong inclination for both comedy and drama. Actors and directors, no matter their age, will find his material fresh and smart. Artistically, his work captures the tones and themes of our digital world while still reflecting our consistent, fundamental humanity. Practically, his works require only minimal costuming, props, and scenery. This makes them inexpensive and simple to produce for large and small theatres alike.
