On a spring morning, Abe is feeling irritable, and tired of his diet. On a whim he decides to reschedule his morning appointment with Jeff to get an ice cream bar. The only problem is Abe and his partner Edith are the angels of death. Things quickly spiral out of control when Abe's plan to get Jeff killed off with his next appointment, Tony, fails. After being "saved" by Abe, Jeff rediscovers life and asks his girlfriend, Zoe, to marry him and celebrate their passion. Looking at the calendar of life and death, Edith discovers that Jeff and Zoe will create a new "unathorized life" which can get them both into big trouble with God.

Forbidden to do it himself, Abe comes up with an elaborate scheme for Jeff and Zoe to elope immediately to Las Vegas where his next appointments are. While Abe makes plans, the deceased Tony, who can't be seen or heard by the living, slips away to a strip club to enjoy his new found freedom. Abe tracks down Tony, and gets everyone on a private plane to Vegas. While the others are distracted, Tony quizzes Abe on God, faith, and death. Exhausted Abe falls asleep and Tony decides to try his hand at stunt piloting.

Arriving safely in Vegas Abe, Tony, and Jeff head over separately to the Viva Las Vegas Wedding chapel stopping in a construction area outside the hotel, where Dinky, a cocktail waitress, and her boyfriend Freddy, a hotel dectective, are to be killed in a construction scaffolding collapse. In a comic twist Abe's plan again fails and Abe adds two more to his deceased entourage and heads over to meet Zoe and Edith.

Surrounded by Tony, Freddy, and Dinky demanding to know the answers to their death existence and Edith threatening to end the partnership, Abe refuses to change his plans and moves forward no matter the emotional costs. In the chapel Dinky and Freddy reveal their own past secrets and hesitation about their commitments to each other. Reverend Elvis and his assistant Priscilla start the ceremony. Abe is moved by Jeff and Zoe's vows to each other of sacrifce and commitment. As the couple is about to say "I Do" Abe confesses to his selfish plans and agrees to help the young couple in a new life no matter the personal cost. As Elvis continues the ceremony suddenly Edith adds herself and Abe as participants to be married and in a surprise Dinky and Freddy particpate too. After Elvis announces them all husbands and wives, Edith asks how Abe got Elvis to say Freddy and Dinky's names. Suddenly God reveals himself through Tony and confronts Abe for his actions. In a learning experience for all, God reveals creation is a work still in process. Abe and Edith are given a new life and Freddy and Dinky are tapped to take over for Abe and Edith. God/Tony celebrates life and everyone sets off for a new beginning.
