John Britton Buttrill is a Southern writer and teacher living in New Jersey. His work explores ideas of isolation, intimacy, race, disability, marginalization, sexuality, and poverty within the milieu of the American South.

Britt's full length plays include To Live & Die in Dixie (Ucross Residency– Alternate Finalist) The Weigh-In (​2017 Nick Darke Award– Short List) Scratching (Fringe NYC; Pinch n' Ouch Theatre), Awake & Love (Access Theater/The Skeleton Rep), Juggalicious (Fringe NYC), and Temporal (New School for Drama–New Voices) His work has been developed in New York City through Naked Angels, The Flea, HERE Arts Center, ESPA/Primary Stages, The Skeleton Rep, Crashbox Theater, and regionally through the Sewanee Writer's Conference. He was the recipient of a New South Young Playwrights Award, was the first recipient of the Jon Robin Baitz Writer's Residency, a Semi-Finalist for the Lila Acheson Wallace Fellowship at the Juilliard School, a Tennessee Williams Scholar at the Sewanee Writer's Conference, a Ucross Foundation Alternate Finalist, and was Short-Listed for the 2017 Nick Darke Award (Falmouth University; UK).

​John Britton Buttrill received a BA in English from Oglethorpe University, studied Romantic Literature, Playwriting, & Fiction Writing at Oxford University; Trinity College, received an MFA in Playwriting from The New School, and is pursuing an MA in English Education at Brooklyn College. He is a New York City Teaching Fellow, teaching high-school English in the NYC public schools. He is currently writing his first novel.
